Having a moan. Empty Having a moan.

Post by Pandora Mon Aug 24, 2009 9:08 pm

I've just been called by someone who wanted me to teach her Reiki, and after a chat about the lineage, she asked my prices. I told her the price for Level 1, and then she asked about Level 2. When I told her my price, she told me that wasn't what others were charging! I was so surprised I told her to "take it or leave it". It's not that she couldn't afford it - she was trying to beat me down because I was more expensive than others!

I actually feel quite affronted by this. Reiki hasn't changed, and I still maintain that the jump in energy between Levels 1 and 2 justifies the jump in price. So the only way I'd be prepared to drop the price or negotiate was if she told me she couldn't afford it, and then I'd start the negotiating process.

Am I over reacting here? She ended the conversation after I told her I wasn't going to reduce the price, so it's obviously not to be. But part of me still feels annoyed that someone should think so little of Reiki that it's to be negotiated round. I know I saved up to do Reiki and it was worth it!

My post did not post scratch

I have had interactions like this myself. Reiki is Priceless
The value of learning the Reiki system brings a wealth of
balance and harmony to Reiki clients/recipients. A person once
told me she'd pay me later for a session, she never did. She
did wear topline clothing and had cell phone. I realized that
she would not have done that to her dentist, hairdresser,
manicurist, etc you get the picture.I never did ask her for the
session money. I just stand firm with the prices that I have set
payable before class/session just like other alternative business'
acupunture, massage etc; My time before, during and after a class or
session is valuable I know its worth more than I ask for. I no longer
get sucked into I can't afford it or can we barter. Having a moan. 850837

I don't think you are over reacting at all.

You have your prices set. If she feels that someone else can give her a better class/mentor/attunement experience for less money, they they should be welcome to go to the other person. If they don't have the money, then just say that you'll be available once they've saved up the money to do the class.

My teacher was more expensive than most (more expensive than my father, but he lives in Ohio while I live in Minnesota).

I know that my father had to make an agreement with his Reiki Master Teacher (I think he got his Reiki III from either William Rand, one of his proteges or one of his students) that his pricing structure would match the teacher's. I was under the impression from my father (at least until I got into the fold myself) that this was typical.

But I wouldn't allow myself to feel insulted either. Because allowing that negativity into the atmosphere wouldn't solve anything. It is likely that the other person just doesn't understand what Reiki really is, so calmly saying, "well those are my prices. If you feel strongly about me being your teacher or mentor, then that is what I charge."

As for barter... I understand Bridget's comment about not falling into the trap of "I can't afford" or "Can we barter" conversations. But I do have to say, that in the alternative medicine community, barter is a very valuable commodity. Usually though, it would be two practitioners bartering for services they both actually wanted/needed.

Thanks for your comments, I'm so pleased I'm not out of order.

I have tried to follow my master's pricing structure, but after 2 and a half years I'm having to put prices up because the venue is more expensive than the one I used to use. So it's still following the structure but the prices are different (if you see what I mean).

I do barter, and have offered reduced prices for students or people on benefits in the past. I'm doing treatment swaps with the wife of one of my students - she's an aromatherapist.

I'm not really negative about it, just surprised. Life is full of surprises!

Andy I do Reiki exchange/barter with other practitioners.
I'm always open and available to offer support to my students
    & clients beyond a paid session/class

I choose to volunteer Reiki at hospitals and nursing homes.
I also offer reduced price for seniors and students. There's
a certain element of barginning that does feel insulting and
    that's when I take a firm stand.

    Hi Bridget sunny

I also have had that happen a couple of times..not on sessions, but on training...I do give students the option of using a payment plan.(basically pay when they can)..twice i was totally jipped when they didn't pay a cent(or in my case a won Shocked )...
despite feeling cheated, one has to let it go pretty quickly, for ultimately it is their loss, if that is the level they operate on...many would probably call me foolish for having such an open and trusting system in place.. well, I don't intend to change it..my classes are not cheap(though excellent value I think~ and on a par with my own investment in my own training)so this way, no one, if they wish to learn, need not be denied that chance due to money restrictions...

Hi chuglet, good to hear from you.
Wealthy people also like getting a
    bargin. Laughing

I feel chasing after money is not my
thing. I have been learning to let go
of other peoples baggage. Life is a
    learning & unlearning process.

I worked with a person who was living
on Gov;assistance. they were very frugel
and bought organic food, clothing, their
    lifestyle was pretty comfortable.Month after
month this person was getting free Reiki
sessions from me. Then they decided they wanted
to learn Reiki 1. this person did not want to
pay for the class. I stood my ground quoted the
cost.A few months later they did take a Reiki class
    and paid the full fee.
