Re: Spirituality and Reiki
This is a really excellant poll! I can't even vote yet ya know.
If a person wishes Reiki for 'healing' then they'd say 'no'. If a person wants Reiki for spirituality they'd say either of them all.
thing is, imo, healing is spirituality, and spirituality is healing. I gotta come back and think bout this, but great topic to get the mind going!

I voted no
When I first was introduced to Reiki
I was told it was not a religion. It
had nothing to do with the laying on
of hands as in the bible.

Is being "spiritually orientated" the same as being religious?
I voted "No, but it helps" because I have found that even if a person would not originally have said they were spiritually-orientated, then if they practice Reiki regularly then they often become more spiritually-orientated and interested in finding out more about spirituality in general. I think it helps because the interest in general spirituality happens quicker (and maybe deeper) if you are already inclined in that direction.

Colin, once upon a time I had no measure of religion
or spirituality that is I never knew what it was like
not to be devoted to religion. To me a spiritual person
was a wo/man of the cloth who kept the flock together
and safe.
When I disconnected from Religion I was at a different
place in my life until I went on my healing journey. It
was during that time I was introduced to the Reiki System.
If I had to identify why I feel more spiritual now than
when I was a devoted religious member of the church, I
would say that Reiki played a big role in helping me find
my inner self. For me Religion did not have the same
quality of spirituality that I now experience. IMO you do
not have to be religious to be spiritual but that is not to
say that you can't be religious and spiritual at the same
time
To "be Reiki" I do not have to attach myself to those who
identify themselves as "Reiki leaders" I am my own spiritual

one does not have to be religious to practise reiki. reiki is beyond religion. it is a stepping stone for spiritual advancement. one can become spiritually inclined after coming into reiki. maybe coming into reiki is his calling from the source.
i have been a spiritually inclined person since birth with various spiritual experiences. coming into reiki just enhanced their occurance.

forgot to add this, just saw the vote results it is 50% for no and 50 % for no but it helps. i did the equalising

Re: Spirituality and Reiki
I voted yes...I would not receive reiki or training from someone that was not embracing their spiritual journey we are spiritual beings living a human experience not the other way round...so in saying that inherently we are all spiritual beings unless you choose not to walk that path, in which case I would not work with a soul on that path.

I am reminded of the picture of one
set of footsteps in the sand and a
voice asking the Lord... where were
you when I needed you. the Lord said
those are my footprints in the sand
I was carrying you.

Bridget,
My observation is, that through your healing journey, and your "being" of Reiki, you have become incredibly spiritual.

I don't believe you need to be spiritual to be successful with Reiki.
However, and ironically, I don't know anyone, or heard of anyone, who is successful with Reiki, who has not become spiritual because of their practice of Reiki.
I think it would be virtually impossible to do all the things necessary to be successful with Reiki, and not have spiritual experiences at some point in the process.

My journey continues and
I have met so many folks like your-
self who validate the power of distant
Reiki and the Reiki system in general.
You have such a wealth of knowledge
within the healing systems. I know that
members on this forum could learn so
much from your experience.

Re: Spirituality and Reiki
I agree with a lot of sentiments already put forth....
one does not have to be spiritually inclined at all, but the very nature of Reiki brings about spiritual awakening..if one embraces Reiki, this is a given.....

Re: Spirituality and Reiki
going with the vein of the question "Does a person have to be Spiritually-orientated to practice Reiki successfully?", i would definitely say a big YES
the words 'to practice reiki' and the suffix 'successfully' have different meanings when combined together, what is the benchmark of guaging that a buddy has now become 'successful' in reiki ??
the question was not that do you have to be spiritually oriented to start reiki practice, rather the question has assumed in itself that a certain time has been lapsed whilst somebody is already practicing reiki... now do she have to be spiritually oriented in order to be successful?
reiki has a theraputic element when treating others, and also has a healing element when treating oneself.... 'success' in treating others, in my opinion, cannot come unless a person has a taste of spiritual orientation... a reiki practitioner, while treating others, does pass through healing herself first, or as maximum, on the same time!
it cannot occur, (again in my views), that a person is successful in treating others while he himself has not, and once a person gets healing through reiki, sprituality is integrated in the equation.
thus, to practice reiki 'successfully', a spiritual orientation is a sure must

depends on how you want to interpret
spiritual does that mean being in touch
with your own human spirit, or a disignated
group?

Re: Spirituality and Reiki
hi Bridget
in the mystic system, which i feel i m connected to, we annotate something like 'doors' of spirituality... we feel and we are taught to believe ()that we have to pass these doors one after the other, on our travel alongside our path...
first of the doors we have to pass is the door of ego, vanity, myself thoughts...
then is the door of physical and sensual pleasures....
and so on, door after door...
the earlier doors refer to ourselves, our desires, our material bodies, or material presence....
once we successfully pass the 'self' doors, we have to pass doors of universe aroudn us... we have to get in touch with the true material essence of the things surrounding us and making our lives... basic elements... water, air, fire, etc... then elemental ores deep down the earthc cust, up above to the thinnest air and the glaxies... and so on....
afer we have succesffuly passed 'doors' of the universe, we come to pass, rather to merge in the doors leading to Divine...
so spirituality starts with 'me', 'myself' transcends to the universe around me, and completes by merger into the Divine (spiritually speaking )

Thanks for that simple explanation.
In my trying to separate religion
& spiritual it would seem that
Human spirit could equate spiritual
being.

hi Bridget
i was just curious to know that what were your experiences when you tried to find spirituality 'within' religion (and not outside it) ?
lemme give you an example... i have studied hinduism, and while i m in no way in agreement of various things within that religion, i can clearly see that various practices within that religion have very sound spiriutal basis if done properly..
and i do dare to generalize that the same thing must be true with other religions too... in my own religion Islam, a great number of practices dont yield their due fruits unless done spiriutally, or to be more general, unless done mindfully....
one thing is common among religions, and that is worship of some sort, and how a worship be ever done without doing it spiritually ? this is a simple question
human spirit equating spiritual being... that i have to say something about
i m among those who believe that we have a soul that is somehow housed in a physical body... and death comes when this tie is severed...
if we try to strenghten our human spirit through various practices, this does not directly mean we are developing our spirituality too... spirituality does not come through spirit alone, it is generated when spirit, mind, body all go united in direction of love and peace...
(i might be confused in using the terms spirituality and spiritualism interchangeably here, and i would appreciate if you give me exact meanings of the two terms as is understood in the west these days)
a spiritual being is a person, in my views, whose physical actions supplement his spirit, and whose spirit in turn helps him to take due adantage and pleasure out of his physical actions... a spirituality without taking into account physical harmony is but only a trap as far as i feel

Re: Spirituality and Reiki
salman your ahead of me, I'm
a late bloomer. I was born into
religion. I did not know there
were other religions out there.
I knew we had catholic,protestant
and jews. The global picture came
very late in my adult life.
When I disconnected from organized
religion much guilt was involved so
I'm pretty much not a follower. I
went on a self-healing journey about
10 years ago and was amazed that I
became much closer to human kind and
my inner self was brought to the
forefront. Instead of they shalt not
I was learning I can. Judgements of
myself and others began to not be part
of my thinking pattern.
I am walking a different path and
learning. We are all at a different
place in our lives. Some of us are
still searching. I see the Reiki
principles being part of a new spirit
that I embrace.
