I feel that motivation and belief is probably the most powerful driving force that helps one awaken to Reiki energies. During my very first two Reiki classes in 1993, the instructor repeatedly described Reiki as The Force. Even though everyone knew Star Wars was a fictional story, likening Reiki to The Force was very motivational for the class (and probably in that time, too, as the remaining 3 movies had yet to be made).
Regardless of the motivational analogies to The Force, Reiki worked quite effectively... I guess that's really not too different a means of teaching than Takata's motivational story of Usui.
