Do i need to be clever ?

Hi
As a new member to the reiki learning lounge i hope this question doesnt seem stupid but, do you need to clever, learned,intelligent and well read to practice reiki.
I dont seem to have read the books or attended the seminars and lectures that most reiki practitioners have, not been to the meetings and training sessions that seem to be obligatory.
I am an ex coal miner,ex steel worker,and now truck driver,into the martial arts for nearly 30 years and drifted into reiki through one of my tai chi students,and i think i have a natural gift for reiki.
I have had some"formal"training but think that reiki should be instinctive,should be a thing felt not learned, Am i wrong !!i have only done a few treatments(if that is what they are called) but the feedback has been overwhelming.
Am i doing the right thing or am i deluding my self??
Any views and opinions would be most welcome.

There are many forms of spiritual healing, some of which are practised naturally by certain individuals and some are learned only after an often lengthy period of training and exercises.

Reiki or Shin Shin Kaizen Usui Reiki Ryoho (Usui Reiki Healing method to Improve Mind and Body) is rather unique, however, in that anybody (whether clever or not, or psychic or not) can practise Reiki after receiving what is known as an attunement or initiation that has been given by a Reiki teacher. That is because an initiation given in such a way re-awakens an awareness of the Reiki that we all already have and enables us to use this to help balance/heal ourselves and others.

Normally, several (at least 3 or 4) initiations are given at level 1, depending on the style of Reiki a teacher practises. You can learn about the history of Reiki and how to perform Reiki from a book or the internet but you really need to receive the initiations from a Reiki teacher, to enable you to practice Reiki. If you haven't received the Reiki inititaions then you may be practising a different form of intuitive spiritual healing but technically it would not be the system of Usui Reiki Ryoho. The mind and body may still become balanced (or move towards balance) and similar subtle energies may be involved but it would not be the system of Usui Reiki Ryoho, which is (or was originally!) a fairly well defined system of practice involving elements including hands-on healing but also the Five Reiki Precepts, Symbols, various Meditations and Techniques and Attunements/Initiations (or Reiju in Japanese).

Only clever Reiki people know what these are:

Not so much obligatory as they are gradually collected over time.

I have yet to meet a long term martial artist who did not have a natural gift for healing energies.

Hmmm... conundrum. From some perspectives, it's only "Reiki" if one has been trained by at least one other who says one is learning "Reiki".

What do you mean by "formal" training?
