As part of his investigations and research for his book, Reiki Master and Reiki Historian, Robert Fueston has discovered something unexpected:

Mrs Takata sometimes did Remote Reiki Initiations and taught Reiki over the telephone!

Looking at the specific letter from Takata-sensei to Doris Duke which Robert is referring to  (mailed from Keosaqua, Iowa, December 19, 1978), it does indeed make reference to the possible option of attempting distance initiation – if Doris wishes to try...
(Though, to be precise, the telephone is only mentioned as a means of confirming a time to enact the initiation, not as part of the process.)

This distance initiation 'revelation' will no doubt elicit much discussion, and be used (or misused?) by many as a validation for their own personal practice of distance initiations.

However, strange as it may seem to many people, what I actually found most revealing about this specific letter is not the reference to distance initiation, but instead, that rather than signing it either 'Takata' (as Takata-sensei commonly referred to herself), or  'Hawayo', she actually signed it 'Hiromi' (her middle name).

    Cool
