Oh LUCKY WOMAN, to be offered such a supreme learning experience as this is bound to be.

I don't think I've ever had an opportunity quite like that in my whole life.

Closest I've gotten was paltry in comparison but seemed extreme to me at the time. I had rented a cottage on the shore for a couple of weeks for my first vacation in several years. DH was not going to stay in town because he was working. I was SO looking forward to peace and quiet, time to reflect, swim, walk on the beach.

Then one day, I'm on the extension while he talks to his mum, who is trying to decide when to visit us. To my horror, I hear "Why don't you come mid-August? We're renting a cottage on the shore then." Aiiiiieeeeeee!!!

I do often find that no sooner do I make a plan for respite of some kind than something beyond my control (such as my husband) throws a spanner in the works. I am not entirely sure what I am supposed to learn from that but my guess is that I should make my day to day life such that I'm not always desperate for respite?

This summer IS going to get interesting...
For a whole week I was spewing venom, wonder what my aura looked like at that time??!!

I had to get the stress out.. forced to reevaluate ... I had to forgive and put on a positive thinking cap.
I asked for help to help me move on.
Then I got the courage to actually call them and say nice things including a welcoming message.

I am glad to say I am feeling better about this situation now and I am actually not faking it.
My policy now is,
'we will deal with it when we get there'
'I refuse to run 'worse case scenarios ' in my head.'
'I am going to bank on the +ve side of their personalities' ( why is my face suddenly twitching..? )

seriously, I still have my +ve thinking cap on!
I will keep you all posted.....

Playing devils advocate here, do you think they're thinking similar thoughts about their stay?

Seriously though, my family has always been of the opinion that "absence makes the heart grow fonder" and made sure to have time apart, even when staying with my grandparents for most of the summer holidays - it was an essential, we had to get out, even if it was just a day's walking down to the front and back!

(sorry I just remembered that "front" is short for "seafront" - non UK nationals might not recognise that term!)

One of the things my Shaman instruction is quite clear on, is the fact that every moment of every day, we should "serve the experience."

This concept is difficult to explain (especially since I'm not sure I entirely completely get it myself.) But ultimately, if we approach every day and every moment in Ayni (reciprocal exchange) with everything around us, then we are serving every experience we have.

Part of serving vs. having an experience, is the ability to give to the experience as much as you get. In this way, you will find that the experience has so much more to offer if you fully envelop yourself in it.

She went so far as to say (this was during our monday class prior to Thanksgiving a couple years ago) that if you can't serve the experience with family, then you shouldn't visit them just out of obligation. Now obviously, there are some bridges we don't necessarily want to burn, so the trick is, to find a way to serve the experience whether you want to or not. In other words, don't go into the experience with a sense of obligation, but rather a sense of sharing.

Additionally, there is another concept called "changing the nature of the engagement." If you find yourself being irritated or angry at something your 'inlaws' are doing or saying, you can do or say something to change the nature of the engagement. This isn't an avoidance tactic, cause you aren't just changing the topic or walking away. Rather you are finding a way to engage in the moment without allowing yourself to feel attachment to the emotions of the moment. And in detatching yourself, you also find that your reactions are such that allow the others in the engagement to have a moment to modify their own behavior as well.

Oh, yeah, They are not crazy about coming here either...
I actually feel bad for my MIL whose dog is very close to dying. She is worried that he will pass away while she is here with us.
The only attractive thing is when she is on her good side she can be an awesome companion. We can laugh and laugh and laugh... and I am planning to ride that.

Andy, thanks for injecting the words of wisdom here. So true -- we have to really bring ourselves to all our experiences, engage instead of "endure."

THC, sure, c'mon -- let's go rafting! That was my only time, on a river in Colorado on vacation last year. It was pretty exciting, for sure. There was only one time where it really seemed like we might capsize but it was definitely thrill-filled.

I had a hectic summer with summer school for kids, 2 guests who left only aug 22, travel etc,.

I am still catching up...
Plus,

I don't like to share computer screens with anyone who doesn't have the same chromosomes as me,
especially ones with stalking , beady little eyes....!!



Now that I have my life back ....
